Some historical facts:

In 1909, the German teacher Richard Shirmann organized some kind of hikes for his students. All of them came from low-income families, so they were not able to pay the over-night stays in hotels. That was why the groups used to stay in school buildings which were closed for holidays and vacations. As soon as one decided to set up the permanent places to overnight in the prototype of the contemporary hostel appeared.

The first hostel was opened in 1912, it was called Altena Castle. Nowadays, there is the museum in its building, while the active hostel is situated close to it.

In 1932, in Amsterdam the first hostel conference ran in which the representatives of 11 countries participated.

In Russia, the first hostel was opened in 1991, in St. Petersburg.
